In this incisive reflection on the tenuous nature of fame, Juliette Binoche is perfectly cast as Maria, a 40-something actor. Maria originally made her movie breakthrough playing Sigrid, an 18-year-old who drives a woman twice her age to suicide; now she finds herself asked to play the older woman in a stage revival of the same work. The project throws her together with—or perhaps against—Jo-Ann (Moretz, Kick-Ass), a sparky Hollywood ingénue, in the role of Sigrid.
As she rehearses in a smart Swiss resort, Maria struggles to confront her professional mortality, while her long-suffering PA (Stewart, Still Alice) tries to help her make sense of it all. Acclaimed writer-director Olivier Assayas (Irma Vep; Summer Hours, also with Binoche) delivers a deliciously wry and understatedly poignant ensemble piece.
