Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Darkside; Enron) returns with another captivating and revealing true story. Playing like a contemporary Greek drama, the film recounts the case of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, a rising New York politician who fought corruption, took on Wall Street and possessed such natural charisma that he was seen as a President-in-waiting. However, Spitzer’s meteoric rise was curtailed by an even sharper and irreversible fall when he was revealed as a prominent client of a $1000-a-night escort service, although there may have been more to his downfall than this seemingly straightforward sex scandal. The film combines interviews with Spitzer himself, who recounts the story for the first time, and an investigation into the forces and characters surrounding him. In Gibney’s hands, the film becomes an enthralling, exhaustive and even, at times, darkly comic political thriller and all-too-human mystery. Released by Dogwoof.
