Born takes its name from a very old neighbourhood in Barcelona where the last battle against the Bourbon troops was fought in 1714, with the result that Catalonia lost its sovereignty. Based on real events, Born follows the adventures of coppersmith Bonaventura, his sister Marianna and the rich merchant Vicenç.
The director Claudio Zulian accurately reconstructs Barcelona in the 18th century, aided by the director of photography, Jimmy Gimferrer, who uses a style reminiscent of Vermeer to portray the era. The film has echoes of late Rossellini and early Greenaway and deserves to be enjoyed on the big screen.
Born, dir. Claudio Zulian, Spain 2014, 90 mins. Catalan with English subtitles.
