Actor-director Mathieu Amalric’s tricksy thriller is an elegant puzzle centred on an adulterous man who finds himself accused of a violent crime. As he is questioned by police, the film darts back and forth through time to explore the events leading up to his incarceration, revealing a story of sex and brutality. Shot in a distinctive 4:3 frame, and based on Georges Simenon’s shocking novel, the film positively brims with sexual tension and dread, recalling an older, noir-infused cinema but with an explicit modern twist all its own.
