BAFTA Masterclasses - Martin Phipps, Film and TV composer

9 Feb 2011

Film and TV composer Martin Phipps is the maestro of the moment. His work on beautifully crafted TV dramas has earned him two Ivor Novello Awards (Elizabeth - The Virgin Queen 2007 and Oliver Twist 2008) and two BAFTAs both for Best Original TV Music (Wallander 2009 and Small Island 2010).

Martin started out reading Drama at Manchester University but soon concentrated his energies on writing music. His style is consistently innovative and strikes at the emotional heart of the drama he is writing for. Martin’s first feature film score was Warp Film’s Grow Your Own (2007), swiftly followed by Endgame (2009) and then the gripping UK thriller Harry Brown starring Michael Caine. Martin Phipps’s latest feature score is for the much anticipated Brighton Rock (2011), reuniting him with director Rowan Joffe whom he worked with on the BAFTA winning The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall (2008). Martin will be taking us through a practical approach to his craft, concentrating on key scenes from his work and revealing whose influences he’s most inspired by.
