Artists' Film Club is proud to present the work of Swiss artist Shahryar Nashat (born 1975, lives in Berlin). Nashat makes videos, sculptures and installations that interrogate dramatic structures, and give expression to the unconscious desires of human and often male subjects. Finding sympathetic equivalence between theatrical spaces, props and actors, Nashat fuses these elements within his videos in order to expose anxiety or physical tension among his protagonists. His videos betray an acutely sculptural sensibility where the classical or figurative body becomes a conflicted site for emotional transactions.
Nashat presents a number of his videos from the past five years for this evening's event, a selection which features recent work, including his new video One more time with James (2009). After the screening Nashat will be in conversation with Isla Leaver-Yap, ICA Exhibition Organiser.
Shahryar Nashat recently exhibited at Kunsthalle St Gallen. He is represented by Elisabeth Kaufmann, Zurich.
This event is supported by Pro Helvetia.
