Artists' Film Club: Collective Action

Collective Action brings together a selection of works that investigate and highlight moments of collective and individual action that challenge social and political paradigms. This group screening captures a cross section of activity from recent political activism to moral and ethical opinion from an international perspective. With Bani Abidi, Hassan Khan, Ciprian Muresan, Ahmet Ögüt, Michael E. Smith and Pilvi Takala.

Bani Abidi (b. Karachi, 1971)
Recent solo and group exhibitions include Making Normative Orders – Demonstrations of Power, Doubt and Protest, Frankfurter Kunstverein (2012), Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art , Gateshead, (2011) and Liberalis – Pursuit of Liberty, KUNST + PROJECTE, Sindelfigen (2011). She was a recent recipient of the DAAD artist in residence programme in Berlin (2011-12).

Michael E. Smith (b. Detroit, 1977).
In 2013, solo exhibitions have taken place at CAPC museé d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, Ludwigforum Aachen and KOW, Berlin. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including A Disagreeable Object, Sculpture Center, New York (2012), Exhibition of Work by Newly Elected Members and Recipients of Honors and Awards, American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York (2012), and the Whitney Biennial 2012, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Hassan Khan (b. London, 1975).
Self-titled solo shows took place at SALT, Istanbul (2012), Objectif, Antwerp (2011), Hassan Khan - The Hidden Location, Queens Museum of Arts, New York, and Lust, Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris (2011). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Momentum Biennial, Moss (2013), and Unrest of Form - Imagining the Political Subject, a project by Weiner Festwochen, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and Secession, Wien (2013).

Ahmet Ögüt (b. Diyarbakir, 1981).
Recent solo exhibitions include This Exhibition’s Factual Accuracy May be Compromised Due to its Practical Nature, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2012), Protocinema/Itinerant, New York (2012), and Or Whistle Spontaneously, Delfina Foundation, London (2012). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including 7th Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool (2012), 53rd October Salon, Belgrade, and Future Generation Art Prize, Pinchuk Art Centre, Kiev (2012) where he was one of the recipients of The Special Art Prize.

Pilvi Takala (b. Helsinki, 1981).
Recent solo exhibitions include Random Numbers, Carlos/Ishikawa, London (2012), Aside, P74 Gallery, Ljubljana (2012), and Breaching Experiments, Site Gallery, Sheffield. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions including TRACK a contemporary city conversation, S.M.A.K., Ghent (2012) and The Ungovernables, New Museum Triennial, New York (2012).

Ciprian Mureşan (b. Dej, 1977).
Recent shows include Six Lines of Flight: Shifting Geographies in Contemporary Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2012), Recycled Playground, Centre d'art contemporaine, Geneva (2012), Déjà-vu? Die Kunst der Wiederholung von Dürer bis YouTube, Staatliche Kusthalle, Karlsruhe (2012), and European Travellers- Art from Cluj Today, Kunsthalle Budapest. In 2012 he also exhibited in the two person show Stage and Twist, at Museum of Modern Art Warsaw and Tate Modern, London.
