The Artist, The Artwork, The Guardian and The Legacy

Chaired by DACS Chief Executive Gilane Tawadros and art law specialist Daniel McClean, speakers including Matthew Arnatt, Achim Borchardt-Hume, Guy Brett, Mark Francis, Mary Moore and Barry Rosen, explore the conceptual, ethical and practical issues that determine an artist’s legacy. Featuring presentations and discussion, this event is presented by DACS (Design and Artists Copyright Society) in partnership with the ICA.

Bringing together curators, artists, artists’ estates and lawyers, this event draws on different perspectives to assess how an artist’s legacy is safeguarded, how artworks are defined and cared for, as well as the private and public interests which determine an artist’s legacy. The event Chairs discuss with speakers questions regarding who is the rightful guardian of an artist’s legacy: is it the family and heirs of the artist or those who manage the artist’s estate, or is it the institutions who safeguard the work and its critical context? In addition, speakers will addresses the question of audience: for whom is an artist’s legacy preserved and what claims does this audience have on the artist’s legacy.

Daniel McClean specialises in art and cultural property law working with different sectors of the art market. His clients include Artangel, The Arts Council of England, Tate, La Colección Jumex (Mexico City), Gagosian Gallery and Pilar Corrias Gallery.

Gilane Tawadros is the Chief Executive of DACS. She was the founding Director of the Institute of International Visual Arts (Iniva) in London, chaired by Professor Stuart Hall, which, over a decade, achieved an international reputation as a ground-breaking cultural agency at the leading edge of artistic and cultural debates nationally and internationally. She has curated numerous exhibitions and has written extensively on contemporary art. She serves on the Boards of Camden Arts Centre (London), London Film and Video Umbrella, Matts Gallery and the Editorial Board of Whitechapel Art Gallery.
