Art for Television

A distinguished panel of guests including Jacqui Davies, David Hall, Terry Flaxton, Shahryar Nashat and Anna Ridley, tackle the subject of art commissioned for television. They bring a wide ranging perspective on art for television made since the 1960s to the present.

Chaired by independent producer Jacqui Davies, who commissions, curates and produces artists work for gallery, cinema, stage and online. She is currently in production with a number of artists’ shorts for Channel 4’s Random Acts.

The discussion panel includes:
Anna Ridley, founder of production company Annalogue, collaborated with artists to produce works for television, innovative & original in form & content, collectively known as Dadarama (Channel 4, 1984/85), was co-producer for 19:4:90, TV Interventions (Channel 4, 1990) as well as producer of several arts documentaries for BBC TV & Channel 4.

David Hall, who pioneered art for television with his series of seven TV Interruptions for Scottish Television, which broadcast without warning in 1971. Hall also co-founded London Video Arts in 1976.

Berlin-based artist Shahryar Nashat, whose work was included in Illuminations at the 54th Venice Biennale, curated by Bice Curiger. Recent solo shows One Stop Jock, Rodeo, Istanbul; Workbench, Studio Voltaire, London; and Strawberry 96, Galleria S.A.L.E.S, Rome.

Terry Flaxton is an artist who was involved with the early video groups Vida and Triple Vision, the latter being responsible for the pioneering TV series On Video commissioned by Channel 4 in 1986. In 1988, Flaxton was commissioned by John Wyver to make a work for another seminal art for TV show, Ghosts in the Machine (Channel 4).
