Based on the novel Professor Unrath by Heinrich Mann, this is the salacious tale of an elderly university professor (Emil Jannings), who becomes obsessed with an attractive young music hall singer (Marlene Deitrich), and abandons his career to run away with her and her troupe.
Josef von Sternberg lends his signature style to this sexually frank drama, one of the last great works of Weimar-era German cinema, which was subsequently banned by the Nazis in 1933.
