This screening is the London premiere of Mister Universo and is introduced by a recorded video message by the filmmakers.
Mister Universo offers a lyrical vision of people working in a dying profession. Through a creative form that blurs the lines between documentary and fiction, it vividly depicts the world of the circus and the stories of its performers. Centred on the story of young lion tamer Tairo, the film follows his quest across Italy searching for a man who once gave him a good luck charm – a former Mr Universe. As it portrays his journey, the film riffs on the notion of performance, creating a playful hybrid form that is true to the magical fictions of the circus stage.
