Art Night: Disused Jubilee Line, Charing Cross Underground Station
The Charing Cross Station of the Jubilee Line was closed down to passenger services in 1999. Its silent platforms, which had operated since 1979 as the Jubilee Line’s terminal station, are preserved in perfect condition. Used for training and rare film shoots—most recently in Bond film Skyfall—thousands of commuters pass by on a daily basis without knowing they exist.
The uncanny disused Jubilee line platform in Charing Cross Underground station is transformed into a sensory installation by Koo Jeong A, co-commissioned with Art on the Underground.
Art on the Underground is a pioneer in commissioning contemporary artworks that enrich the journeys of millions on the Tube every day. From large-scale commissions at Gloucester Road station to the pocket Tube map cover commissions, Art on the Underground has gathered a roll-call of the best artists over 15 years, maintaining art as a central element of Transport for London’s identity and engaging passengers and staff in a sense of shared ownership.
Please note that the installation by Koo Jeong A in the Disused Jubilee Line, Charing Cross Underground Station is strictly ticketed in advance.
Accessibility: there is no step-free access to the station and a moderate level of fitness is required to walk the 100 static escalator steps and stairs between ground and platform level and along the route.
How to get there
Use the entrance of Charing Cross Underground Station for Bakerloo and Northern lines on Trafalgar Square. It is located right next to the statue of Major General Sir Henry Havelock and it is also the public subway to: Strand, Cockspur Street and Charing Cross Station.
At the entrance you will be greeted by the Art Night Guides, who will direct you to the Underground Station ticket hall, where our staff will provide further access.
- Public transport - Plan your journey using Transport for London's Journey Planner or call Transport for London on 020 7222 1234.
- London Underground and Rail - The nearest tube stations are Charing Cross (Northern, Bakerloo and British Rail lines) and Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly lines). Piccadilly Circus (Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines) and Embankment (Northern, Bakerloo, District, and Circle lines) are also nearby.
- Bus - Routes 3, 6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 23, 24, 87, 91, 139, and 176 stop at Trafalgar Square. See Bus Countdown information from Transport for London.
- Bike - The nearest bike stands are on Orange Street, St Martin’s Street, St Martin’s Place, and Duncannon Street. Please check Urban Cycle Parking for further information. The nearest Santander Cycles docking stations are on St Martin’s Street, Craven Street, Pall Mall East, William IV Street, Charles II Street and Oxendon Street. You can also use Cyclestreets to plan your cycle journey.
- Car -There is a parking space on Orange Street for Blue Badge holders only. Please book in advance by calling 020 7747 2590. There are designated parking bays on St Martin’s Street. Please phone Westminster Parking Information Service on 020 7823 4567 for more information. Public car parks are available nearby in Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square.
- Boat - The nearest pier is Embankment. Plan your journey with Thames Clippers.
Art Night is a new annual contemporary arts festival that transforms London for one summer night on 2 July 2016. Your ticket does not guarantee entry, however ticket holders are given priority on the evening. To ensure entry we advise that you arrive in good time.
Please note that all tickets for Art Night events are available for collection at the relevant venue and cannot be collected from the ICA Box Office.
