Pablo Larrain, No, 2013

Pablo Larraín Focus: No

3 Apr 2016

Based on a true story, NO stars Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries, Y Tu Mamá También) as cynical young advertising executive Rene Saavedra, who is asked to spearhead the “No” campaign for those opposing the Pinochet regime to bring democracy to Chile. With scant resources, constant scrutiny from individuals sympathetic to Pinochet’s totalitarian regime including ad agency colleagues and the secret police, this bold, enthralling film looks at how Rene, his team and opponents of the dictatorial regime instigated change.

Seamlessly blending scripted scenes with archive footage, NO is a compelling period piece which earned Larrain his first Oscar nomination - Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2013.
