Speeches - Chapter 1: Mother Tongue

Journal: Artists' Film Club: Bouchra Khalili

16 Aug 2014

French-Moroccan artist Bouchra Khalili looks at diaspora and the modern migrant in her moving image work; specifically recounting the often personal narratives of those living in Central Africa, East Africa, Afghanistan, Palestine, Sudan and Turkey, her moving image practice encompasses single-channel and installation.

In this screening, which features a cross section of her moving image work, her diasporic interests are revealed. From recent works including The Speeches Series video trilogy (2012-2013) which features monologues by immigrants recounting their personal circumstances (from which Part 1 will be shown at ICA), to The Mapping Journey Project, an earlier series of works, which sees the artist propose as set of alternative maps charting clandestine journeys across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, Khalili reveals the personal in what is often unseen or unspoken.

Bouchra Khalili (born 1975, Casablanca, Morocco), lives and works in Berlin. Raised between Paris and Casablanca, Khalili studied Cinema at the Sorbonne Nouvelle, and Visual Arts at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts, Paris-Cergy. Recent solo exhibitions include Living Labour, PAMM, Miami (2013); The Opposite of the Voice-Over, Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Toronto (2013); Wet Feet and More, DAAD Galerie, Berlin (2013) and Galerie Polaris, Paris (2012). Recent international exhibitions include The Encyclopedic Palace, 55th Venice Biennale (2013); Cross-Border, ZKM, Karlsruhe (2013); La Triennale, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012); The 18th Biennale of Sydney (2012); Mapping Subjectivity at MoMA, New York (2011); and The 10th Sharjah Biennial (2011) among others. She received the 2011-13 Vera List Center for Art and Politics Fellowship, New York; 2012 DAAD-Artist-in-Berlin Programme and winner of The Abraaj Group Art Prize 2014 and Sam Art Prize 2014.
