Hito Steyerl Gallery Tour: Linda Stupart

24 Apr 2014

Artist, writer and educator Linda Stupart gives a tour of the Hito Steyerl exhibition.

Linda Stupart is from Cape Town, South Africa and is currently a PhD candidate in the Art Department at Goldsmiths College with a project engaged in new considerations of objectification.

Her writing and visual practice enacts a non-division between writing and making; experimenting with intimacy, embodied critique and realisms without representation. Thematically, the work situates ‘self’ as material – working with strategies of confessional, critique and fictional writing and image/object production in relation to other kinds of materials, and in particular relation to productions of images, art and art worlds.

Stupart has written numerous catalogue essays and contributed features to a publications including Art South Africa, Kaleidoscope, Art Review, Shopping Hour, Eros as well as book projects Oh Wicked Flesh and Idioglossia. Her work has been the focus of two solo exhibitions in Cape Town and has been shown in galleries both in South Africa and Europe.  She has presented at a number of conferences including, recently: Aliens and Anorexia: A Chris Kraus Symposium at the RCA, Affect, Trauma and the Transmission of Memory at Goldsmiths, Contemporary Experimental Women’s Writing at the University of Manchester and the World Ornamental Forum at the Kirchner Museum in Davos and will present at the upcoming Shimmering Worlds conference also at the University of Manchester in April.

Stupart worked for a number of years as a part-time lecturer, tutor and course convener at the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art. She is currently an Associate Lecture in Critical and Theoretical Studies at London College of Communication and a Teaching Assistant for the MA Critical Studies and BA Critical Studies programs at Goldsmiths, University of London.
