Larry Goves and Mira Calix + Will Dutta and Guests

19 Feb 2011

An exclusive evening of newly composed classical and electronic performance featuring Live Weekends curator Will Dutta and the collaborative partnership of Larry Goves (London Sinfonetta) and Mira Calix (Warp Records).

Calix and Goves began Exchange and Return 18 months ago as a research and development project supported by Arts Council England. During this period they exchanged working methods, technical practices and creative forms with one another. Mira learnt about orchestration and scoring from Larry, whilst Larry delved into early dance music, the joy of DJ’ing and the boundariless practice of electronic performance. The duo began to write music together, concentrating on their new areas of interest and will present material from Exchange and Return as well as earlier collaborative works for Live Weekends: Notation and Interpretation. With Larry, a classical composer who has been incorporating electronics into his pieces, and Mira, hailing from an electronic background that has recently incorporating classical instrumentation, Exchange and Return aptly highlights cross-fertilisation in contemporary music practice. This performance comes at the end of a week-long residency at Aldeburgh music, where both composers have worked with an eight piece ensemble recorded for BBC Radio 3. Larry and Mira will be joined by players Sarah Nicholls and Olliver Coates.

Noted for his critical reconsideration of modern-classical music performance-practice Notation and Interpretation curator Will Dutta also performs exclusive arrangements for this event. Drawing on material from his forthcoming album, Dutta will be joined by special guest performers in arrangements of his recent collaborations with Warp veterans Plaid, sonic artist Scanner and composer Max De Wardener among others.

In his career as a performer, and his works as a producer, Dutta’s programme represents his ongoing interest in the meeting point of dance, electronic and contemporary classical music. Whether it is the pattern-based Minimalism of John Adams and his contemporaries or the colourful sonorities of the French Impressionists which inspire today’s dance producers, throughout the history of western classical music there has always been a cross-pollination of sound between art music and folk/dance idioms. Dutta’s collaborations look to go some way in re-establishing these connections.
