Founded in 1978 and instrumental in the fledgling New Zealand punk scene, along with the Flying Nun record label, The Clean have influenced everyone from Yo La Tengo to Times New Viking. Member Robert Scott performed at the ICA in May 2009 with his other band The Bats supporting Crystal Stilts. The Clean’s sound draws on everything from the psychedelic paste of Barrett/early Floyd to vintage Velvet Underground but never with any forced appropriation; while some bands seem to say, "Look at my record collection," in the case of The Clean, it's organic, seamless, and inimitable. Fresh from supporting Pavement at Brixton Academy and playing the Pavement-curated ATP festival, this trio have endured so many years maintaining a completely unique, quality stamp that's often replicated but never quite mastered by anyone but themselves. Support by Jowe Head and the Demi-Monde. An ATP concert.
