Vanaja

15 Mar 2008

"A beautiful and heart-touching film." Roger Ebert

A tale of class, family and irrepressible character, set in rural southern India. Vanaja, the daughter of a low-caste fisherman, works for a local landlady and learns to dance in order to broaden her professional horizons. When romance ignites between Vanaja and the landlady's ambitious son, friendships and social mores are tested. A wonderful film, described as "neo-realism crossed with the eccentric characters of Dickens".

Dir Rajnesh Domalpalli, India/USA 2006, 111 mins, subtitles, Cert 12
