Barbara Ehrenreich and Geoff Dyer on Collective Joy

Barbara Ehrenreich and Geoff Dyer on Collective Joy

2 Apr 2007

In her new book Dancing in the Streets, the acclaimed American writer and campaigner Barbara Ehrenreich argues that carnivals, mass festivities and acts of communal celebration are indigenous to the West, but have been treated with suspicion and sometimes brutally stamped out by elites in recent centuries.

At the ICA, she explores with Geoff Dyer, author of Yoga for People who Can't Be Bothered to Do It and a regular visitor to The Burning Man Festival in Nevada, how we can revive the spirit of carnival and the intense communal pleasure which it is capable of releasing.

The conversation is chaired by Jackie McGlone, feature writer and journalist.
