ICA Executive Director Gregor Muir looks at the week ahead.
Dear All, This weekend we are celebrating the book launch of As seen in BLITZ: Fashioning '80's Style by former fashion editor Iain R Webb. There will be a pop-up show in the ICA Theatre curated by Iain R Webb, with a series of talks with special guests, and film screenings all celebrating the deeply influential pages of BLITZ.
On Tuesday 14 May, ICA Student Forum member Sylwia Serafinowicz, art critic and curator hosts a panel discussion On Collaborative Elaboration of Meaning: Photography & Film to explore the process of photographing artists’ action and performances as a creative dialogue between photographer and performer. Speakers include Alice Maude-Roxby, Programme Leader in Photography at the University College Falmouth and Althea Greenan, Curator, Woman’s Art Library, Goldsmiths.
Among films at the ICA this week we have Our Children (À Perde La Raison), a chilling family drama by celebrated director Joachim Lafosse. This multi-layered dissection of an unorthodox family unit won actress Emilie Dequenne the prestigious Un Certain Regard Best Actress Award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Other films this week include a last chance to see Don Hertzfeldt’s mesmerizing It’s Such a Beautiful Day and an ICA Cinematheque screening of Tropical Malady in 35 mm which was originally released in the UK by ICA Films.
Our Culture Now on Friday 17 May, sees artist Jac Leirner discussing how her work is formulated through a process of collecting and ordering; tapping into what she describes as the 'infinity of materials'. Leirner will be in conversation with Jochen Volz, on the occasion of her first solo show, Hardware Silk at White Cube Mason’s Yard gallery.
As part of our Artists Film Club on Saturday 18 May we will be screening Olaf Breuning’s Home trilogy where each 30 minute film follows Breuning’s alter ego, as he travels to a range of exotic locations across the globe in a continual state of cultural anxiety. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Breuning.
I look forward to seeing you at the ICA very soon.
Best wishes,
Gregor Muir
ICA Executive Director
