This Sunday morning  we have a special 10am screening of Let The Right One In. The film will be introduced by psychoanalyst Andrea Sabbadini and followed by a discussion with guest speaker psychoanalyst Donald Campbell - who introduces the film here:

"Eli, the 12 year old female vampire on the cusp of puberty in Tomas Alfredson's Let the Right One In (2008), goes against the grain of the traditional vampires of the past; tall dark men, stalking, seducing and biting the pearly white necks of beautiful women. Alfredson eschews adult sexuality and exposes the infantile roots of the vampire myth. Another 12 year old Oskar, who is sweet natured, lonely and bullied, meets Eli, and the film follows the development of their relationship in a desolate town in northern Sweden. A psychoanalytic perspective will be brought to bear on Eli's cannibalistic and sadistic orality as she struggles to survive, and Oskar's efforts to establish an adolescent identity."

This event is part of the Screening Conditions series Horror: The Dark Side of the Unconscious, a selection of chilling but intelligent films raising fascinating questions about the appeal of horror movies and concepts of spectatorship and transformation.

Donald Campbell is a past President of the Institute of Psychoanalysis, a former Secretary General of the International Psychoanalytical Association, and worked for 30 years at the Portman Clinic, an NHS out-patient facility that provides psychoanalytic psychotherapy for violent and delinquent patients and those suffering from a perversion. He has written on the subjects of violence, suicide, shame, child sexual abuse, adolescence and horror films.

Andrea Sabbadini is a practising psychoanalyst and is the Director of the European Psychoanalytic Film Festival and of the Screening Conditions series of films at the ICA. Book here
