The ICA Academy Apprenticeships: Supporting Cultural Careers
From the beginning of 2014, the ICA welcomed two new apprentices to the team. As well as gaining hands-on experience in the cultural sector, all apprentices have the chance to meet and work directly with artists, filmmakers and cultural professionals.
Shanah Daniels, 18, has been working as the Events Apprentice since January, assisting the Events Manager with private hires of the venue. Having embarked on A-Levels in Business and Art, Shanah began to feel that college wasn’t the place for her. 'If others are like me in thinking that college or university just isn’t the right move, then an apprenticeship is a great way to build a career'.
Shanah is interested in music and history, 'often both together,' she adds, 'so I started looking at apprenticeships in the creative field. When I first heard about an apprenticeship vacancy at the ICA, I was excited. Everyone works as a close-knit team to keep things running smoothly. The work ethic from everyone is brilliant; I feel it shows real dedication and passion not only for what they do but also for the ICA'.
Upon her arrival, Shanah had reservations about certain aspects of the job. 'One vital part of my job is to answer phones, which I was particularly nervous about because I felt I had no knowledge of what to say or how to deal with anything - but now I know there’s nothing to worry about'.
On a day-to-day basis, Shanah deals with telephone, email and face-to-face enquiries, scheduling events from weddings to location shoots in different spaces at the ICA. She leads site visits, arranges all necessary catering and equipment, and assists with the management of contracts. 'So far I have taken on a handful of events all on my own which I’m really proud of'.
Sam Goldward, also 18, joined in March 2014 as the Operations Apprentice. 'My role,' explains Sam, 'is to assist the Operations team with running the building and the processes within, including a range of duties from IT helpdesk queries to organising outgoing post. One of the best parts of my job is that it carries me round the building, and I’m able to interact with staff from other departments'.
Having previously visited the ICA on a school trip, Sam already had some familiarity with the venue and its programme. He recalls how the experience inspired him to be more creative with his own work. The main attraction for Sam was the cultural heritage of the institution.
When asked to describe one of his favourite moments so far in the job, Sam concluded that 'there are so many great moments at the ICA that make you glad to work here, but the best one so far for me was seeing Stephen Fry come in for an interview'.
Sam has been enjoying his time behind the scenes at the ICA. 'On my first day, I was hoping for a positive, lively work environment where everyone is a team player - the ICA did not disappoint,' enthuses Sam. 'The staff are friendly and helpful, and I was instantly made to feel like part of the team. I’m happy to say that I enjoy working at the ICA and consider it a great reason to get out of bed in the morning!'
