Sophie’s work interrogates the materiality of everyday objects by devising processes that test their structural limits, challenging and often inverting their supposed functions. In this way the work enacts a practical examination of the relationship between finished artworks and their constituent matter.
This is typified in the umbrella works by the use of plaster and concrete. The umbrellas are forced to reform themselves as their material limits are tested and stressed. The finished works quote traditional media, having painting-like surfaces, and sculpture-like armatures. They challenge the relationship between matter and art, proposing versions of sculpture and painting that are not contingent on the combination of art “stuff” into art “works” but rather on actions exerted on any number of existing materials.
